We are looking for a Senior Director Counsel attorney to provide guidance on regulatory matters and industry developments related to Bakkt’s expanding crypto activities. This is a great opportunity for a collaborative, creative legal mind who is interested in contributing to company-wide programs to support compliance with licensing and regulatory requirements. This is a full-time role, reporting to Bakkt’s General Counsel.
Major Tasks, Responsibilities And Key Accountabilities
- Deliver business-oriented legal advice on regulatory and licensing matters for new and existing crypto products, including buy/sell/hold, loyalty redemption, and payments
- Support Bakkt’s regulatory change management program by tracking regulatory developments and evaluating how new laws and regulations might affect our business
- Team up with other counsel (internal and external) to help shape regulatory strategy across the Bakkt ecosystem
- Evaluate federal and state legislative and regulatory proposals
- Work with our product, risk, industry relations, and compliance teams on risk assessments, internal audits, and regulatory exams
- Manage our relationships and licenses with relevant regulators, including with respect to:
- Money transmission licenses throughout the US
- New York State virtual currency licenses
- As the crypto regulatory space evolves, other regulators including the CFTC, SEC, and banking regulators
- Provide assistance as needed with respect to other areas of Bakkt’s business, including:
- Contract review and negotiation
- General corporate and commercial matters
Basic Requirements & Experience
- Graduate of a well-regarded law school.
- Minimum of 4 years’ legal experience– ideally with a mix of law firm and in-house experience, but attorneys with only law firm experience also will be considered.
- Strong experience with financial services regulation, which may include trading and banking regulation
- Excellent communication skills with ability to negotiate at high levels.
- Strong writing skills and attention to detail.
- Confidence in regulator-, client- and customer-facing situations, presenting a positive and professional image; excellent interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work under short deadlines and outside normal working hours with minimal advance notice and minimal supervision; self-sufficient and independent.
- Conceptual thinking in complex/ new situations and ability to communicate ideas both internally and externally.
- May require limited domestic and international travel.
