OVERALL ROLE PURPOSE
We are looking for a highly qualified Regulatory Legal Counsel to oversee the legal and regulatory aspects of our business. You will safeguard our reputation by guaranteeing that the company strictly follows law guidelines and give legal advice to management about all relevant issues.
The successful candidate will effectively ensure regulatory and legal conformity and minimise probability of exposure. The Regulatory Legal Counsel will take ownership of regulatory interactions and ambitions of the entire Wirex group as well as core corporate and commercial matters, while working closely with the rest of the Legal Team on in-house matters.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Interpret and analyse existing and upcoming legislation, regulatory policy developments and assessing its impact on the organisation. Some of these regulations can include but are not limited to MICA, 5MLD, FCA Rules, Singapore (MAS) Rules, UAE and ongoing crypto and payments focused regulations;
- Organise applications from start to finish for new regulatory approvals within selection of above jurisdictions and licenses as well as maintaining compliance with current ones;
- Advise the senior stakeholders in relation to the interpretation and implementation of new regulatory developments;
- Providing training to the business on new regulatory developments and marketing restrictions occuring across the globe;
- Liaising with and instructing external counsel when required;
- Protect and enhance Wirex’s endeavours, objectives and reputation by providing timely and appropriate legal services;
- Draft and negotiate agreements, contracts, terms and conditions and other legal documents regarding current and expanding Wirex services and service providers.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
Wirex operates in a context which is more complex than is usual for financial institutions, given the application of its activities. The position of Regulatory Legal Counsel is pivotal to our rapidly expanding business, therefore requires a proactive and versatile approach to providing solutions. Consequently, excellent judgment is required as is the ability to navigate a complex in-house legal landscape.
- Protect and enhance Wirex’s endeavours, objectives and reputation by providing timely and appropriate legal services;
- Maintain current knowledge of alterations in legislation and regulations across key jurisdictions and related to crypto/e-money/payments areas;
- Day to day responsibility for Wirex’s global regulatory footprint;
- Draft and negotiate agreements, contracts, terms and conditions and other legal documents to ensure the company’s full legal rights;
- Data protection advice and guidance to the business and key stakeholders;
- Drive a culture of professional excellence and agility, as well providing visible and effective leadership of the team through a period of change;
- Oversight and management of external legal advisers ensuring delivery and value for money.
EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED
- LLB, JD or equivalent legal degree required
- A junior to mid-level lawyer with at least 1 year relevant PQE with regulatory experience in UK or EU and knowledge of EU and UK regulatory landscape in digital asset and electronic money areas, financial services, and consumer facing laws acquired both in private practice and in-house.
- An experienced and qualified legal professional who has experience in working in a complex legal function and managing change and a track record in building strong relationships with key stakeholders
- Well versed in all aspects of commercial, corporate and e-commerce law, with extensive general counseling experience in business environments, with an in-depth understanding of how legal issues affect organisations.
- A good understanding of payments industry, financial services and the main components of business activity envisaged for Wirex as well as the bigger picture such as political pressures and the company’s development objectives.
- First class interpersonal and communication skills, and fluent in English both written and spoken.
- Strong strategic, analytical and influencing skills.
- High degree of professional ethics, integrity and gravitas.
- Excellent judgement and analytical skills.
- Ability to anticipate legal issues or risks and to “see around the corner”.
- Able to work across multiple jurisdictions.
- Fintech, crypto-asset, or general financial experience strongly preferred
