Role Overview
A core member of Cboe's global infrastructure organization, the NOC Engineer is a highly technical, hands-on engineer responsible for supporting, operating, and improving the reliability, performance, and fairness of network connectivity across all trading platforms — including on-premises and cloud environments. This role is designed for experienced network technologists who combine deep networking fundamentals with foundational cloud engineering awareness, modern automation, AI-assisted tooling, and software-driven operations. Cboe’s network function operates as a multi-tier, customer-focused engineering team that bridges Network Engineering, Security Engineering, Systems Engineering, and the Trade Desk. Network Engineers provide world-class technical support while also acting as true engineers — owning complex troubleshooting, customer connectivity onboarding, real-time monitoring, incident response, change execution, and escalation management for a highly distributed, latency-sensitive global network.
A defining element of this role is its strong emphasis on AI-enabled operations and automation. Network Engineers actively design, build, and maintain intelligent tooling using Claude Code, Python, and APIs to modernize alerting, accelerate root cause analysis, reduce mean time to repair (MTTR), and eliminate repetitive operational work. A strong understanding of API-driven automation is a core requirement, and experience building or operating agent-based automation is considered a strong differentiator. This role is expected to contribute directly to the evolution of a next-generation, software-driven network and cloud operations function.
Network Engineers work independently with minimal supervision, collaborate directly with customers' network engineers and internal infrastructure teams, and serve as escalation points for junior staff. Candidates must be comfortable supporting critical infrastructure during extended shifts and participating in an on-call or escalation rotation as required. Success in this role requires technical depth across routing, MPLS, firewall technologies, and packet-level troubleshooting, as well as operational judgment, strong communication skills, and the ability to translate complex telemetry and packet-level data into clear, actionable outcomes for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
This role operates on a structured shift schedule to support Cboe's global follow-the-sun coverage model. Shifts are structured on a Wednesday–Sunday or Friday–Tuesday basis to ensure overlapping regional support and continuous weekend coverage. Schedules may also adjust periodically throughout the year in alignment with daylight saving time changes across regions.
Major Job Duties
Customer Connectivity Engineering & Network Provisioning – 25%
- Engineer, onboard, and certify customer connectivity across global data centers and cloud environments, including physical circuits, AWS networking, decommissioning, and entitlement‑based market data access.
- Configure and deploy production network changes to edge routing, customer-facing infrastructure, and cloud network constructs (e.g., VPCs, subnets, routing tables, security groups, and transit gateways).
- Develop familiarity with cloud-hosted connectivity components and assist in provisioning and validating cloud network changes in support of customer onboarding activities.
- Partner with customer network engineers and internal data center and cloud teams to test and validate trade entry and market data connectivity across on‑prem and cloud platforms.
- Participate in internal and industry‑wide testing events, including scheduled weekend change windows and customer certification activities.
- Support internal and external ticket queues for network and firewall connectivity requests spanning colocation, backbone, and cloud environments.
- Supporting, configuring and troubleshooting network protocols such as: BGP, OSPF, MPLS, PIM Sparse Mode, HSRP and other common networking protocols.
Customer Support & Communications – 15%
- Provide expert technical support and guidance to customers and sales coverage teams regarding Cboe network connectivity and access models.
- Staff the NOC Hotline and manage inbound support tickets, delivering timely, clear, and professional customer communications.
- Proactively communicate planned maintenance, infrastructure changes, and project milestones to affected firms.
- Participate in a rotational on-call schedule to support the global trading environment during non-staffed hours.
Real-Time Monitoring & Incident Response – 20%
- Proactively monitor global customer connectivity, market access paths, and back-end trading infrastructure — including cloud-hosted services — in real time during trading hours.
- Analyze network telemetry, interface error conditions, packet loss, TCP retransmissions, and statistical alarms to detect and remediate issues before customer impact.
- Monitor availability of public-facing and cloud-hosted Cboe services and escalate technical incidents according to defined operational procedures.
- Drive rapid incident response to minimize MTTR while maintaining accurate situational awareness and communication.
Escalation & Advanced Troubleshooting – 15%
- Collaborate closely with Network Engineering, Cloud Engineering, Systems Engineering, internal infrastructure teams, and external vendors to diagnose and resolve advanced network, cloud, and market data issues.
- Develop working familiarity with cloud infrastructure (AWS networking, routing, and security controls) to assist senior engineers in scoping and resolving hybrid connectivity issues.
- Lead structured technical investigations and contribute materially to incident resolution and service restoration.
Automation Enhancements & Development – 15%
- Design, build, and maintain operational automations using Python, API‑driven integrations, and Claude Code across monitoring, alerting, ticketing, and network telemetry systems.
- Develop familiarity with cloud-native services (e.g., AWS, CloudWatch, or equivalent) and assist in extending automation coverage into cloud-hosted infrastructure.
- Develop and maintain Grafana dashboards to visualize SNMP and telemetry data, enabling faster fault isolation and more effective troubleshooting.
- Extend and finetune the monitoring stack to onboard new devices and data sources, including custom metrics, collectors, and dashboards.
- Build tooling that strengthens root cause analysis, predictive monitoring, and data‑driven operational decision‑making within the NOC.
Packet Analysis & Problem Management – 10%
- Respond to customer multicast gap claims and complex market data integrity inquiries.
- Perform packet captures and deep packet inspection using tcpdump/Corvil or equivalent platforms to analyze traffic behavior and explain observed anomalies.
- Produce clear technical findings and contribute to root cause analysis and long-term problem management initiatives.
