Job Summary
Uphold is strengthening its European Finance organization and is looking for a Senior Accountant to take technical and operational ownership of its European entities in a regulated, fast-growing environment. This is a senior, high-autonomy role responsible for ensuring accurate and compliant accounting under Portuguese GAAP, IFRS, and U.S. GAAP bridge reporting.
You will act as a key technical reference for auditors, local accounting partners, and Uphold’s global Finance team, playing a critical role in strengthening financial controls, improving processes, and supporting the company’s continued growth across Europe.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Own the month-end and year-end close processes for European entities, ensuring timely, accurate, and audit-ready financial reporting.
- Prepare, review, and maintain balance sheet reconciliations, investigating variances and ensuring integrity of financial data.
- Lead coordination with external auditors and local accounting partners, ensuring compliance with Portuguese GAAP and IFRS requirements.
- Prepare and submit statutory, financial, and regulatory reporting to local authorities.
- Act as a key point of contact for group reporting alignment, supporting consolidation and U.S. GAAP bridge reporting.
- Establish and maintain governance and control frameworks over Accounts Payable (operational execution may be supported by Finance Operations).
- Partner with Engineering and Finance Operations teams to automate accounting processes and improve data quality.
- Support tax and compliance processes by preparing required documentation and meeting regulatory deadlines.
- Contribute to financial risk assessments and internal control reviews, proactively identifying and addressing control gaps.
- Create and maintain documentation of accounting processes and controls to support standardization and scalability.
- Represent the Finance function with integrity, confidentiality, and accountability when engaging internal and external stakeholders.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Certified Accountant in Portugal (Contabilista Certificado) – mandatory.
- Strong technical knowledge of Portuguese GAAP and solid understanding of IFRS.
- Exposure to U.S. GAAP reporting and group reporting frameworks is a plus.
- Proven experience managing month-end close audits, and external accounting providers.
- Experience working with ERP systems (NetSuite strongly preferred).
- Advanced Excel skills and strong analytical capability.
- High attention to detail, technical rigor, and ownership mindset.
- Ability to work autonomously, exercise sound judgment, and challenge assumptions when required.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills across local and international contexts.
- Experience in regulated environments such as financial services, fintech, or payments.
- Big 4 experience with regulated entities is a plus.
- Fluent written and oral English and Portuguese skills.
