CoinFlip is seeking an experienced Assistant General Counsel to support the Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel across litigation, regulatory matters, and strategic legal initiatives. This is a unique opportunity for a seasoned litigator and/or regulatory attorney to help shape the future of digital asset compliance and risk management at a leading fintech. At CoinFlip, you'll work on the front lines of litigation and regulation in a fast-paced environment where innovation meets accountability—and where your work will directly influence how crypto infrastructure evolves in the U.S. and abroad.
While the primary focus of this role is on U.S. legal and regulatory matters, CoinFlip is actively expanding internationally—and this position will play a key role in advising on cross-border issues and supporting global legal operations as new markets come online.
The ideal candidate brings strong litigation experience and a background in financial services, preferably including money services businesses (MSBs) and/or cryptocurrency or fintech. The Assistant General Counsel will serve as a trusted legal advisor to the business, balancing legal risk with operational and strategic objectives in a rapidly evolving regulatory landscape.
Key Responsibilities:
Litigation & Dispute Management
- Manage and oversee all aspects of litigation, arbitration, and dispute resolution, including consumer, commercial, regulatory, and employment matters.
- Work closely with the Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel on litigation.
- Collaborate with and manage outside counsel; control costs and ensure high-quality legal representation.
- Draft, review, and supervise pleadings, motions, discovery, and legal memoranda.
- Advise senior leadership on litigation exposure, trends, and mitigation strategies.
Regulatory & Financial Services Advisory
- Provide legal guidance on federal and state financial services laws, including BSA/AML, MSB regulations, money transmitter laws, and crypto-related regulatory frameworks.
- Support regulatory inquiries, examinations, enforcement matters, and investigations.
- Partner closely with Compliance, Risk, and Operations teams to interpret regulatory requirements and support policy development.
- Monitor legal and regulatory developments impacting crypto kiosks, OTC trading, and digital asset services.
- Collaborate with the Government Affairs team on legislative and policy matters, including advising on proposed regulations, drafting comment letters, and, where appropriate, representing the company at public hearings or providing testimony in legislative or regulatory proceedings.
Other Responsibilities
- Stay current on litigation trends, financial services regulation, and crypto industry developments.
- Support special projects and initiatives led by the Chief Legal Officer, General Counsel or Global Head of AML.
- Additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
- Active bar membership in at least one U.S. jurisdiction (Illinois preferred or ability to obtain).
- 7–10+ years of relevant legal experience with litigation experience.
- Proven experience managing outside counsel and complex litigation matters.
- Background in financial services, fintech, or other regulated industries.
- Strong legal drafting, analytical, and communication skills.
- Ability to operate independently while collaborating closely with senior legal leadership.
Preferred
- Experience with money services businesses (MSBs), payments, banking, or cryptocurrency companies.
- Familiarity with BSA/AML, OFAC, consumer protection laws, and state licensing regimes.
- In-house experience at a fintech or regulated financial institution.
- Experience advising high-growth or technology-driven companies.\
Compensation and Benefits
- $180,000 - $220,000 USD yearly salary
